I work at a 24/7 helpdesk that monitors ATM?s. My hours are 3:30 PM ? midnight with Sunday and Monday off. Recently, I applied for 2 different positions in different departments that would be day hours with Saturday and Sunday off. I haven?t heard back from either one of those yet so I don?t have a good feeling about them.
My department just opened a lead position on third shift with Monday and Tuesday off. I?ve been told by 2 of my supervisors that if I applied, I would have a 99% chance of getting it. Now those hours suck big time but I really need the extra money. Between $7,000 - $10,000 more a year. BTW, the other 2 positions would probably pay about the same as this one. Well anyway, my dilemma is that if I go for this new job and get it, I would be making more money and it would look good on my resume but I would hardly ever see my girl or anyone at all really. Sure I could sleep after work and see my girl in the evenings but now I see her all day Sunday at least. She works days with weekends off.
Here?s the other thing, another lead operator that works 8:00 AM ? 8:00 PM and has Sat, Sun, Mon, and every other Tues off might be leaving in the next few months. If I go for this lead job and get it, I could take over his schedule if and when he leaves and that would be fucking sweet. If I don?t go for it, and he leaves, whoever got the third shift lead position would have first dibs on the good hours and third shift would be available again with no hope of leaving that shift anytime soon.
So I could wait on the first two jobs I applied for and forget about the third shift slot and then just look for another job outside my company if I don?t get either one. Or I could go for the third shift slot and hope this guy leaves so I can get some badass hours.
My girl told me I should go for the third shift lead position even though we would see each other less but I know she really doesn?t want me to. To tell you the truth, I?m not too wild about the hours either. I don?t know what the hell to do.
I really hope you guys can give me some good advice. I?m thinking about just saying fuck it and just looking for another job outside my company. Thanks for reading this.

you're the only one who can decide, all i can say is that money is very very very very very important. But some things are MORE important than that

The money is good, but the hours totally blow. I've been doing 10pm to 7am for about a month and it totally screws up your life. In the fact that unless you lived with people with the same shift, your world is totally backwards. That 8-8 shift with it's days off sounds pretty sweet.

Sculpey - Yeah that 8-8 shift is real sweet but who knows when and if I could to switch to that.
Jor - That's the exact reason for my dilemma.

the better paying one IS nice, but the 8-8 one's sweet too, I say go for both, whichever you get first is ...whichever you get first!
though, the extra money would definately be nice, the final decision's up to you....depends what you prefer, really

If the 8-8 shift was the one that was available, I'd be all over it. I just don't want to go to 3rd shift, this guy doesn't leave, and I'm stuck on 3rd.

When I'm at work now, I'm tired all fucking night.
As soon as I get home around 12:30 I'm wide awake until about 4:00.
